The Asics Gel-1090 From Bape Doesn't Blend In
In 2019, ASICS resurrected the GEL-1090, a runner from the early 2000s. The releases have slowed since then, but the company is hoping to revive the silhouette with a partnership with one of the industry's greatest names. Just ahead of its worldwide debut, BAPE's reinvention of the vintage runner gets an official glimpse today.
The old school silhouette is dressed in camouflage, which is BAPE's preferred motif. Despite the fact that camo is supposed to help you blend in, you'll definitely stick out in these bad guys, owing to the complementing bursts of orange, red, and yellow scattered throughout.
The upper is mostly made of mesh with suede overlays for a forest camo look. The ASICS tiger stripe, GEL-1090 logo, and additional tiger claw patterns right above the midsole give bursts of color. The color is also used in BAPE's tiger shark pattern, which is found on the shoe's medial side. More yellow logos appear on the tongue and heel, while red-colored BAPE and ASICS emblems show on the insoles.
Of course, this isn't the first time BAPE and ASICS have joined together; the two previously collaborated on the GEL-Kayano Trainer in 2015.
The BAPE and ASICS collaboration GEL-1090 shoe will be available for $18,800 (about $180) in BAPE's flagship shops and BAPE web stores starting August 22.
