New Balance 1080 v10

Looks:

When it came to creating the New Balance 1080 v10, they definitely went for an athletic style. The knit top covers 34% of the shoe and is finished with a black heel cap. Underneath that knit, the top is very structural, with a bigger toe box supporting the front, black threads woven in to support the center, and thicker weaves in between.

The big and extremely reflective “N” at the centre of the sneaker is the first thing you notice. Although the shape is a little slimmer than original New Balances, no one would mistake this shoe for anything else. A thin overlay with color-matching laces and a mesh tongue sits just above the N.

The black heel cap has a wavey design at the rear that also serves as structure. With the heel cap tapering up and away from your ankle, they borrowed a leaf from Adidas' book.

The shoe features a full-length footbed that has held up well over time. The straps that keep the bootie-style tongue in place haven't changed, at least not outwardly. These sagged almost instantly, and they're looking really awful. Consider aged bacon. Thankfully, no one will notice you wearing them.

While the upper of the shoe performed admirably, the midsole was a different story. To disguise the creases on the most current New Balance 1080s, New Balance used a highly intricate pattern of ridges and circles. It didn't work out.

After only a few wears, these midsoles started creasing like crazy. Fresh foam, despite its name, is not the material for you if you like a fresh-looking midsole.

The midsole's troubles do not end there. This has to be the most flimsy material I've ever encountered in a shoe. With typical use, huge parts of the midsole have been pulled out, and there has been some unsightly scraping all around the edge. I understand that shoes wear out, but the contrast between these and some other shoes with a comparable number of miles is astounding.

The outsole, or at the very least the rubber pads on the outsole, has fared a little better. They've seen more wear than any other shoe I've had for a similar period of time, yet they don't have any chunks missing.

Fit & Comfort:

When it comes to fit, the New Balance 1080 v10 is quite accommodating. I got these in a 12.5, but they could have easily slipped into a 13. Furthermore, not only is the top flexible, but it also comes in a variety of widths. Almost anybody should be able to locate a pair that perfectly aligns with their foot.

As a starting point, I recommend getting half a size smaller than your usual New Balance 99X/Nike size. If your foot doesn't exactly fit, they will expand out little with wear.

Before we get to the midsole, I think the knit upper from New Balance is my favorite. Flyknit isn't always stretchy enough for me, and Primeknit is too stretchy. It does not provide as much support for my foot as I would want. In this case, New Balance has struck a fantastic middle ground.

The distinction is obvious when it comes to the midsole. The fresh foam in the New Balance 1080 is more like a pillow than most current foams, which are focused on "energy return" and are highly bouncy.

Materials & Construction:

The New Balance 1080 was designed with a minimalist approach in mind. The top is a standard polyester knit with no particular trademarked identity. It has performed admirably in terms of durability. Another plastic weave is used for the rear heel counter, which has a plastic cup within. An Ortholite insole runs the whole length of the shoe. There are no complaints about any of this.

The shoe features a few carefully placed rubber cushions on the bottom, but most of it is basically exposed foam.

Cemented structure holds the shoe together. This is the most popular type of running shoe structure, because it makes the most sense to utilize. In a nutshell, it simply glues the upper to the midsole.

The materials and construction aren't especially innovative, but that isn't necessarily a negative thing when it comes to running shoes.

Ease Of Care:

It's not difficult to take care of these sneakers. The knit uppers may be spot cleaned with water and a little soap if necessary. With the paint they apply on the midsole, it covers dirt rather effectively.

All you have to do now is make sure you provide enough time for the midsole to expand as much as possible between wears.
